Chihuahua city is located in the north of Mexico. Almost 900 thousand people live in the city. For 2016 in the "Plan de acción climática municipal" (PACCMUN), it was estimated that around 14 millions of tons of CO2 are emitted each year. In recent studies like "Agenda Hídirica Municipal para Chihuahua" realized by the rural development agency and the urban and ecological direction of the municipality, it has been mentioned that the "Day Zero" – the day the water runs out, is very close for Chihuahua, estimated for 2040 in a "business as usual" scenario. Municipality of Chihuahua is an arid territory where cattle and agriculture are the main economical activities for rural population. Increasingly drought conditions and increasing desertification are worrisome, principally in the most margined zones. These vulnerable zones are at the same time the areas where it is possible to "harvest water" by infiltration in order to increase aquifer recharge. These zones are localized into the "Ejidos" which means an area of communal land used for agriculture. People in ejidos have individually parcels and collectively maintain communal holdings with government oversight. The municipal government has identified in these polygons needs of hydraulic works to retain and infiltrate water in order to recharge the aquifers. We propose to complete this work with reforestation in these zones because people are sensible of problematic. They work together and the synergic impact of both activities can be important for people in "Ejidos" because they could benefit from reforestation in the same time that the citizen of Chihuahua could benefit from water harvest, CO2 capture, and forest restoration and ecosystems conservation.
Main expected results
To promote a water forest creation to help Chihuahua city to avoid driest physical risk and against climate change impacts on water requirements.
To establish a CO2 sink to help Chihuahua city against climate change
To develop economic and social benefits around reforestation actions
To plant 120.000 trees in 200 hectares (density of 600 plants per hectare);
To establish a pool of 4 species in the surfaces of project to promote biodiversity and
To promote the social participation in the process to generate sustainable
development in the zones of the project.
The project is proposed in the "Sierra del Nido" into the "Ejidos" and private properties where communities and farmers have potential areas for reforestation activities. Other reforestation areas take place in the Tabacotes Ranch.
